Humanitarian Trips Abroad: What to Know Before Joining One

Thinking About Joining A Humanitarian Trip?

If you’re considering joining a humanitarian trip, you’re about to go on a journey that will change both you and the communities you serve. Humanitarian trips, like MEDLIFE's Service Learning Trips, are an opportunity to contribute positively to the lives of people living in underserved areas around the world, but it’s important as a volunteer to be well-prepared. Before you pack your bags and head out, there are several key things to consider to ensure your trip is successful, safe, and impactful.

Packing for Your Humanitarian Trip

Packing for a humanitarian trip is about more than just clothing, it's about being prepared for the environment and challenges you’ll encounter. Depending on the country you're visiting and the time of year you'll be there, you'll want to bring practical items like sturdy shoes for walking or hiking, lightweight clothing for warm climates, and layered clothing for cooler climates. It's also important to know if it will be raining while you're down there, or if you'll be swimming on any added excursions you might choose. If you're unsure of what the weather will look like, you can always ask your trip advisor.

Also, don’t forget essential items like sunscreen, insect repellent, and a reusable water bottle. If you’re volunteering in a medical setting, ensure you bring necessary personal supplies, like scrubs and face masks.

Understanding the Country You’re Visiting

Before you leave, it’s important to learn about the country you’re visiting. Each country has its own customs, language, and culture. MEDLIFE strongly encourages volunteers to familiarize themselves with the basics of local languages and cultural practices. This can help avoid misunderstandings and show respect for the communities you’ll be serving.

Knowing a few key phrases in the local language can help you communicate and build rapport with community members. Additionally, understanding cultural norms, such as greetings, food etiquette, and dress codes, can help you fit in and make a positive impression. It's important to note that most of the countries we work in have cultural norms that lean towards more conservative clothing. That means when in doubt, covering up when in public is usually a good idea.

Behavior Expectations and Conduct

As a volunteer, you represent not only yourself but also MEDLIFE as a whole. It’s essential to conduct yourself with respect and professionalism at all times. In clinics, follow the guidance of medical professionals and respect local healthcare protocols. You might not have direct patient care responsibilities, but you’ll likely assist in clinics, help with intake forms, or distribute medications. Always remain respectful of the local staff and the communities you're serving, listening to their needs and learning from their expertise.

When out in the town or city in your down time, act responsibly and respectfully. Don’t engage in behavior that could be perceived as inappropriate or illegal, and always be aware of the cultural differences around you. Remember, you’re there to contribute positively and learn about the culture, not to be a nuisance.

Safety and MEDLIFE’s Policy

MEDLIFE takes the safety of volunteers very seriously. Before embarking on your trip, you’ll receive a comprehensive safety briefing. This includes information on local customs, safety protocols, and emergency procedures. While you’re volunteering, MEDLIFE’s team is there to support you, and our staff is available for 24/7 assistance in case of any issues or emergencies.

Additionally, we ask that volunteers adhere to our safety policies, including guidelines on traveling in groups, being mindful of personal security, and taking precautions against illness or injury. These measures ensure that you and the communities you serve remain safe throughout your trip.

Joining a humanitarian trip abroad through MEDLIFE is an incredible opportunity to make a lasting impact on underserved communities. By preparing properly, packing essentials, learning about the culture, and understanding how to conduct yourself, you’ll be able to set yourself up for success and truly make a difference in the lives of others. Remember, a humanitarian trip is a chance to showcase your ability to be a responsible, compassionate, and mature individual in settings that are new and exciting.
