What Is A Dental Service Learning Trip?
MEDLIFE Dental Service Learning Trips provides free, high-quality dental care directly to communities that lack access to basic services. Staffed by local practitioners from Movimiento Sonrisas, volunteer dental assistants will work directly with professionals to provide quality care. These week-long trips are designed for students interested in global dental relief, where they collaborate directly with local experts.
In collaboration with our partner Smiles Movement, these trips specifically engage dental students committed to making a positive impact worldwide.
How Volunteers Support
Dental Care
Volunteers function in a variety of roles, including:
- Patient registration
- Station set-up
- Instrument preparation
- Shadow dentists throughout procedures like extractions, fillings, and cleanings
- Lead adolescent dental education workshops.

Day 2
Reality Tour
The day begins with breakfast followed by a bus ride to a MEDLIFE partner community. The day concludes with a welcome meeting and orientation covering safety protocols, clinic flow, and expectations for the week.
Day 3-5
Dental Clinic
Participants rotate through dental and clinic support stations alongside local professionals, gain hands-on experience in community-based dental care, and reflect on clinic operations and patient flow while building confidence over multiple days.

Educational Workshop
This day focuses on structured educational workshops designed specifically for dental students. Sessions may cover topics such as community oral health, preventative care strategies, patient education in low-resource settings, and the role of dentistry in public health. I think that being involved with MEDLIFE has given me so many amazing opportunities that I wouldn’t otherwise have had as a pre-health student. It has definitely confirmed my passion for medicine.
Rhiannon

It’s such an amazing experience. You will really get hands-on experience working with doctors, and you get to just meet a ton of cool people, I definitely recommend it.
Emily
Harvard University
I really enjoyed connecting with different patients and the global health aspect of MEDLIFE as well. It has made me also potentially consider a path in global health.
Katlyn
Northeastern University
If you’re thinking that you want to go just do it! It’s easy to get caught in book work, textbooks and you’ll not get the same experience as you will just reading about the things that you can do than actually going out and doing them. Go out!

The MEDLIFE Difference
Listening to Community Needs
In our classic Service Learning Trips, the dental station is consistently one of the most-requested services, but the dentists are only able to treat 15 patients a day. The high demand led to the creation of the Dental Service Learning Trip, a Service Learning Trip dedicated entirely to the type of health services the communities want and need!
Permanent Dental Facility
In addition to our work in the community during the Dental Service Learning Trip, MEDLIFE has a permanent brick-and-mortar dental clinic – MED Dental – which supports patients year-round.
Working hand in hand with Local Professionals
Our Dental Service Learning Trips are staffed by local doctors and nurses. Because they speak the language, understand local systems, and provide culturally sensitive care, our patients take confidence in the work we do and the services we provide.
Education Beyond the Doctor’s Office
The MEDLIFE Dental Service Learning Trips do more than treat the immediate dental issues patients face. Our volunteers spend a day in a local school educating students on dental health and self-care topics to raise awareness, break stigmas, and provide kids with the tools to lead healthier lives.
Other Service Learning Trips
Apart from our dental SLT, we provide a wide variety of service learning trips. Our programs are tailored for college and high school students, educators, and group leaders.
Our Alumni: Where They Are Now
