Nursing Opportunities Abroad: 5 Steps to Start Your Journey With MEDLIFE

Written by Mary Bourke | Dec 2, 2025 12:00:00 PM

Curious about participating in nursing opportunities abroad but unsure where to begin? MEDLIFE’s Service Learning Trips offer a guided and ethical pathway for future nurses who want to explore global health, learn new skills, and support underserved communities. Here are five steps to help you get started before embarking on your trip of a lifetime.

1. Learn What International Nursing Experience Really Looks Like

Before leaving for your trip, it's important to understand how culture and environment affect healthcare outcomes, especially in underserved communities. Participating in nursing opportunities abroad through MEDLIFE introduces you to health challenges shaped by social factors such as access to clean water, education, and transportation. It's vital that you understand things like the social determinants of health and the unique challenges that each community faces.

2. Explore MEDLIFE’s Destinations

Trips are available in Peru, Ecuador, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Tanzania. Each location has unique healthcare challenges. For example, high-altitude Andean communities face different needs than coastal or rainforest areas. Before you choose a location, do some research on how each culture differs from one another and which one you'd like to learn from. Check out our blog on what to know about Peru's culture before visiting for the first time.

3. Get Ready for Hands-On Learning

On a Service Learning Trip, you may support patient intake, distribute pharmacy materials, assist with educational workshops, or observe nurses and doctors in mobile clinics. This experience gives you practical exposure that helps you prepare for future training. If you really want to boost your educational experience, come prepared with a list of things you'd like to experience. Maybe you want to shadow immunizations, or you'd like to strengthen your Spanish by speaking directly with the patients. Having a clear goal in mind before you leave for your trip can be beneficial to you and help your trip leaders place you in the stations that feel the most meaningful.

4. Learn What To Pack

Depending on the location you choose and the time of year you're going, it's important to know what clothing and materials you'll need in order to have the most comfortable volunteer experience. To find packing lists for each destination, click here!

5. Encourage Others To Join & Make A Difference

You don't have to travel alone! You can encourage people from your school and community to join your MEDLIFE Service Learning Trip. Click here to learn how you can organize a trip by starting or joining a local MEDLIFE Chapter and travel abroad with friends and peers.
