Affordable Volunteer Abroad Programs: Options for Students on a Budget

Written by Mary Bourke | Dec 3, 2025 12:00:00 PM

Many students want to make a difference and travel abroad, but the costs associated is often what stops them from being able to do so. If you’re looking for affordable volunteer abroad programs, it helps to know where to look and how to compare options. At MEDLIFE we offer several Service Learning Trips that combine service, real-world exposure, and global health experience that makes a positive impact, all while keeping costs reasonable.

Ranking Our SLT Locations by Cost

1. Peru (Cusco, Lima, Andes & Amazon regions)

Peru remains a top option among affordable volunteer abroad programs, especially for those from the U.S. and Canada. The exchange rate to Peruvian Sol makes for reasonable prices of food, transportation, shopping, and more. This is one of our top destinations for young people and students for a reason.

2. Guatemala (Antigua and rural communities)

Guatemala is another cost‑effective destination for those seeking affordable volunteer abroad programs. With a low cost of living and many of the tourist attractions being nature-based, volunteers can enjoy being part of meaningful community outreach programs without worrying about their budget. Depending on the season you travel, flights can be quite affordable as well.

3. Costa Rica (Tamarindo, San José)

While Costa Rica is slightly pricier than Peru or Guatemala, it still qualifies among one of the more affordable volunteer abroad program locations, especially when compared to some higher‑cost alternatives. MEDLIFE projects here combine education on healthcare disparities with environmental awareness, offering a balanced experience for students that includes beach and jungle time without a luxury travel price tag.

4. Ecuador (Riobamba, Tena)

Ecuador’s SLTs tend to be a bit more expensive than those in Peru or Guatemala, but still remain within reach for many students who budget carefully. Since Ecuador's official currency is the U.S. dollar, volunteers may not be able to enjoy the lower conversion rates of countries like Peru or Guatemala. However, Ecuador is still known for being quite inexpensive when it comes to food and transportation.

5. Tanzania (Kilimanjaro and surrounding regions)

Among our offered destinations, Tanzania generally ranks as the highest-cost option, due in part to it being a far distance to travel for many. Nonetheless, for students committed to global service, this destination remains a worthwhile, albeit higher-cost, choice when budget permits.

What Makes our Programs Affordable

  • Short-term commitment: All MEDLIFE SLTs are designed as one-to-two week trips. This means you won’t need to commit to months abroad, a big plus for students managing school, work, or other responsibilities.

  • Shared costs and local partnerships: By working with community partners and trusted local services like hotels, shuttle services, and restaurants, our programs reduce added fees and maximize funds going directly back into community support and the local economy.

  • Support and structure included: All our volunteer programs include accommodations, a majority of meals, transportation to and from projects, travel insurance, and 24/7 in-country support, reducing unpredictable expenses while abroad.

How to Maximize Volunteering on a Budget

  • Plan early, expect modest living costs. Especially in Peru or Guatemala, your budget goes a long way.

  • Fundraise or apply for scholarships. MEDLIFE encourages volunteers to fundraise or apply for financial support if needed. You can also earn discounts on SLTs by becoming a MEDLIFE Advocate Rewards member.

  • Be mindful of travel and personal expenses. Flights, passport application fees, and personal spending are separate from program fees, budget these carefully.

  • Choose a location that matches both your budget and your goals. If funds are tight, Peru or Guatemala offer strong impact with lower cost.

Volunteering doesn’t have to break the bank to be meaningful. With thoughtful planning and a focus on impact, affordable volunteer abroad programs can offer students a rich, educational, and culturally rewarding experience without an overwhelming price tag.
