Poverty in Costa Rica remains a prevalent and harsh reality for many individuals and families, even in a country known worldwide for its natural beauty and "Pura Vida" lifestyle amongst locals. Understanding the depth and complexity of poverty in Costa Rica helps explain why volunteering or supporting communities there is so important and why MEDLIFE does the work that we do in rural and low-income areas.
Recent data shows that a large portion of Costa Rican households struggle to make ends meet. According to national statistics, around 24–25% of households fall below the poverty line. That means roughly one in every four families faces economic hardship, often lacking stable income, access to consistent employment, or sufficient support to meet basic needs like food, housing, and healthcare.
In addition, inequality is a major issue. Despite progress in some social indicators, income distribution remains incredibly uneven; Costa Rica has one of the highest inequality metrics in the region. This disparity means that while tourists and wealthy residents may enjoy comfort and abundance, many rural communities still face insecure living conditions, limited job opportunities, and inadequate access to services.
For many families in rural or marginalized urban areas, poverty in Costa Rica goes beyond just a lack of money. It affects access to stable housing, healthcare, quality education, and reliable infrastructure. Communities may struggle with insecure employment, limited access to clean water and sanitation, or unstable housing conditions. Social safety nets and public services often fall short, especially in regions hit hardest by inequality.
Families headed by single parents, especially single mothers, are disproportionately affected. Low wage levels, limited formal job opportunities with flexibility, and structural social inequalities leave many without sufficient resources to cover basic living expenses, child care, or health needs.
Luckily, for volunteers looking to help, there are real opportunities to contribute to meaningful change in low-income areas in Costa Rica.
